WWI Centennial Lecture Series: Elaine Weiss

"The Patriot Farmerette: Woman's Land Army in New Jersey" 

As part of the Museum's World War I Centennial Lecture Series, on Sunday, Oct. 8, at 4 pm, historian and author Elaine Weiss will discuss the topic, "The Patriot Farmerette: Woman's Land Army in New Jersey."

Inspired by the women of Great Britain, who organized as the “Land Lassies,” the Woman’s Land Army of America was formed during World War I by a consortium of women’s organizations to supply labor to American farms after so many men joined the army. From 1917 to 1919, some 20,000 women from cities and towns signed up to work as farm laborers to keep food production at high levels during the war effort. 

Weiss is the author of a book on this topic, Fruits of Victory: The Woman’s Land Army of America in the Great War (2009). She is also a journalist, radio producer and frequent speaker.
