According to the International Dyslexia Association, Structured Literacy prepares students to decode words in an explicit and systematic manner. This approach not only helps students with dyslexia, but there is substantial evidence that it is more effective for ALL readers.  Structured Literacy instruction requires the deliberate teaching of all concepts with continuous student-teacher interaction (explicit) and the organization follows the logical order of language from the easiest to most difficult concepts or elements (systematic).

 

Structured Literacy consists of several elements:

*Phonology is the study of sound structure of spoken words such as rhyming, counting words in spoken sentence, clapping syllables, and manipulating phonemes and is a critical element.

*Sound-Symbol Association (phonics) is mapping the phonemes to symbols or printed letters. Phonics is taught and mastered in two directions: visual to auditory (reading/decoding) and auditory to visual (spelling/encoding).

*Syllable Instruction is the teaching of the six basic syllable types in the English language and syllable division rules.  The syllable types help the reader determine the sound of the vowel in the syllable. Syllable division rules assist the reader with where a word is divided for accuracy in reading a long, unfamiliar word.

*Morphology is the study of base words, roots, prefixes, and suffixes.

*Syntax is the grammar, sentence variation, and the mechanics of language.

*Semantics includes instruction in the comprehension of written language.

 

Join me to learn how to implement structured literacy instruction in your classroom with a focus on phonological awareness, phonics, syllabication, and morphology.

 

Session Outcomes

• Acquire how to assess and gather baseline data by using the phonological awareness skills test (PAST) to guide phonological and phonemic awareness instruction.
• Acquire hands-on activities and/or manipulative tools to instruct phonological and phonemic awareness.
• Acquire how to utilize a phonics screener to assess and gather baseline to guide phonics instruction.
• Acquire how to utilize the lesson format and scope & sequence of Recipe for Reading to teach phonics with a multi-sensory approach.
• Plan for whole and small group syllabication and morphology instruction by using multi-sensory activities to match the needs of students.
