Do you have students frequently off-task? Disruptive, disrespectful, or defiant? Engaging in other problem behaviors? Effective intervention for challenging behavior requires understanding the relationships between a student’s behavior and the environment, including conditions that trigger problem behavior and the consequences that maintain it. Behavior—whether appropriate or inappropriate—works for students in some way; when teachers understand the purpose (function) of a student’s problem behavior, they can design much more effective interventions. In fact, a strong body of evidence has demonstrated that function-based interventions have much stronger and longer lasting positive effects on student behavior than non-function-based strategies. Participants will learn about principles of behavior and function, and basic ways to identify and use function to develop more effective interventions to improve common challenging behaviors. Participants will work with the presenter to develop specific action plans for applying these practices with students in their own classrooms and contexts.
