“Implications for the Use of MRI and US: Spondyloarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Beyond”

Friday, April 17-Saturday, April 18, 2015
JW Marriott Santa Monica Le Merigot, Santa Monica, CA 90401

Learning Objectives:

  • Appreciate the role of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Ultrasound (US) when evaluating disease progression in spondyloarthropathies and identify patients who may benefit from the use of these imaging technologies
  • Discuss the recommendations for the use of MRI and US in the clinical management of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and assess how they can be best utilized in private practice and in clinical research to improve outcome measurements, especially in patients considered in low disease activity or remission
  • Review clinical cases in various rheumatic diseases and utilize evidence-based data in order to discuss when MRI/US or both imaging technologies could be used in order to optimize patient outcomes
  • Learn the fundamentals of joint ultrasound examination by becoming familiar with relevant ultrasound topographic, anatomic landmarks of the upper and lower extremities and understanding both the unique and complementary roles of ultrasound in assessing musculoskeletal disorders.
  • Optimize ultrasound scanning techniques by performing standard gray scale and Power Doppler of the hands and feet.
  • Cite the limitations that currently exist when utilizing MRI and US in clinical practice and incorporate strategies into practice that may assist in overcoming these barriers.
