AABLI Workshop Series: Pathways to Corporate Boards 

Interested in learning how to make yourself a credible candidate for a corporate board seat? Many professionals think about serving on a corporate board, but the fact remains, it's not easy to get elected on one! 

  • Is it best to first serve on a nonprofit board? 
  • Should I expand my network? 
  • Must I send my CV to a search firm? 

The answer could be none or all of the above.  Take this opportunity to learn how to chart your course from experienced corporate board leaders.  

 

About the Panelists:

Reveta Bowers is Head of School for The Center for Early Education.  A leader in her community and in the field of education, she is currently serving on the Board of Governors of the UCLA Health Care Systems, Common Sense Media and Fedco Corporation Foundation.  Bowers has served as a member of the Klingenstein Center Advisory Council at Columbia University, was an outside director of The Walt Disney Company, past President of the Fulfillment Fund and the California Community Foundation.  A partial list of her other past board memberships includes The Educational Records Bureau (ERB), National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS), Harvard Westlake School, Brentwood School, and Windward School.  After earning her degree in Humanities from the University of Southern California, she continued her graduate work and completed a master’s degree in Developmental Psychology and three California teaching credentials.

 

Gil T. Ray was a Partner of O’Melveny & Myers LLP, until his retirement in January, 2000.  He practiced corporate law, with extensive experience with conventional corporate, acquisition, securities and tax exempt transactions, as well as international finance.  He headed for ten years the government relations practice of his firm involving state and local laws, rules and regulations and specific advice with respect to political contributions, analysis of legislation and negotiations with governmental agencies.He is a member on the boards of Advance Auto Parts, Inc., DiamondRock Hospitality, DineEquity (IHOP and Applebees), Seasons Series Trust, SunAmerica Series Trust, Towers Watson, and The John Randolph Haynes and Dora Haynes Foundation. Gil served on numerous non-profit entities,  commissions and task forces, including the Independent Commission on the Los Angeles Police Department, and the Los Angeles Ethics Commission. 

Dr. Larry Taylor is a seasoned independent professional corporate director with a long history with environmental and social initiatives having served on publicly traded corporate boards, private company boards, non-profit boards and corporate advisory boards.  Currently he serves on the boards of Satori Food and Beverage, Inc., The Creighton Group and Profit+Impact (a B-Corporation).  His current non-profit boards include Cranbrook Horizons Upward Bound for disadvantaged youth in Detroit and the National Association of Corporate Directors (SoCal).  He holds a PhD. in Executive Management from the Peter Drucker School of Management at Claremont University, a master’s degree in Business Administration from Pepperdine University and a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Administration from General Motors Institute.   He is a Board Leadership fellow with the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) and a Professional Director with the Corporate Directors Group (CDG).

Janet Clayton (Moderator) is senior vice president of corporate communications for Southern California Edison and its parent company Edison International. She leads internal and external communications, corporate and brand positioning, and community relations and philanthropic programs. Prior to joining Edison, Clayton was president of ThinkCure, a community-based nonprofit that raises funds for cancer research and is the official charity of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Prior to ThinkCure, Clayton had a distinguished career at the Los Angeles Times as a key member of the newspaper's leadership team. She held numerous positions, including editor of the editorial pages, where she determined the Times' official opinions, and California section editor, where she managed the largest news staff at the newspaper. Clayton has received many accolades for excellence in her profession, including recognition as the editor of two Pulitzer Prize-winning series. She holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Southern California.
