The Art of Production Dramaturgy

How can a dramaturg’s work enrich a production? How can a dramaturg support the artistic vision of the director and the work of the creative team? In this 5-week course, we will take a deep look at the role of the dramaturg and discuss how dramaturgs help transform a text into a rich theatrical experience. We will analyze short dramatic texts - both classic and contemporary. We will also discuss the evolution of dramatic form. More importantly, we discuss how dramaturgs can use their knowledge of plays and dramatic history to inform production practices. When a student leaves this class, they will have the skills they need to serve as a production dramaturg!

Firebird Children’s Theater (FCT), an elective theatre workshop for youths, strives to provide the same educational experience to all participants. However, FCT is not a school or daycare facility and as such, is not equipped or obligated to provide special services, including but not limited to, nursing staff, PCAs, the administering of medications, OT, PT, speech therapy, behavioral therapy, any other type of therapy, or IEP services. If special services are needed to accommodate a participant, it is the responsibility of the parent or guardian to arrange for these services in advance with approval from FCT. Services must be provided by the parent or guardian and made available for the entire course of the workshop or as needed. FCT will work with aides, nurses, therapists, and parents to ensure a positive and beneficial workshop experience for all our staff and participants. However, given the nature of the FCT program, there may be some accommodations which cannot be made. Those decisions rests solely within the discretion of FCT.  Please contact us if any arrangements need to be made.
