"YOU SAY WHY TOASTMATERS AND I SAY WHY NOT TOASTMATERS!"

By Scott C. Miller

The oldest form of communication is the spoken word followed by the written word. We share our thoughts, dreams and desires with those around us. However, over the past few decades the methods of communication have been rapidly changing and the world is hungry for the next "new" things. But do the new tools really make us feel connected with the rest of the world? I think no and relying on the fundamental of the spoken word, i.e., public speaking is not as scary as you have been led to believe. Knowing how to craft and deliver your stories and message more effectively is what Toastmasters is all about.

Scott Miller was in graduate school at the University of New Mexico (UNM) where his next-door neighbor invited him to a Toastmaster meeting and I joined without any hesitation. To prepare for a doctoral disseration you need every advantage you can get. As a contract software engineer, he constantly uses his Toastmasters skills for job interviews, presenting infomation and reports to the FAA and upper level management.

Scott also provides outside talks on various areas of Physics, Astronomy and problem solving. He tailors' his presentations to his audience, such as, he gave 12 weekly talks to fifth and sixth graders about basic astronomy, nuclear physics, how spectral analysis and how to compute the distance to the stars. While in California he impressed another toastmaster club member that he was asked give a presentation to the 2011 Los Angeles Regional Gathering of Mensa with the subject title: "A Star Trek Search in a Seinfeld Way: An Overview of Current Astrophysics Research into the Dark Nature of the Universe." The talk turned out to be one of the most attended events during their conference.

But there is so much more to than just speaking so come to the meeting and find out more about Toastmasters and how it can help your life.
