Meeting the Challenge of State and National Literacy Standards with the Collins Writing Program ~ Princeton, NJ 

Grades 3 to 12

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW  

For teachers in all subject areas at grades 3 through 12, department heads, principals, supervisors, curriculum coordinators, curriculum committee members, and special educators.

This is our foundation workshop. It shows teachers in any content area how to use the Five Types of Writing to increase students' understanding and retention of course content while simultaneously increasing student involvement and motivation to learn. Most importantly, this workshop gives teachers practical, sustainable strategies for bringing their students to the level of literacy demanded by the Common Core.

All participants will receive a complimentary copy of The Collins Writing Program: Improving Student Performance Through Writing and Thinking Across the Curriculum by John Collins.

 PARTICIPANT OUTCOMES 

• Integrate meaningful writing into every class without sacrificing the teaching of content
• Establish clear, focused criteria for assessing all types of writing, including those we expect to find on the Common Core test
• Help students develop general academic vocabulary stressed by the Common Core—the kind needed for success in all disciplines
• Improve student comprehension of informational text
• Use writing to save time during classroom instruction without piles of additional papers to correct
• Employ the power of frequent formative assessment and “effortful retrieval”
• Empower students to use self-monitoring and peer feedback during the writing process—accomplish more in less time
• Quickly create great writing assignments that promote learning of content and motivate students
• Improve writing skills and content knowledge through argument writing and summarizing
• Implement a portfolio and authentic assessment model that is manageable
• Utilize easy-to-use resources for helping students communicate in the formal style of language required in the Language Strand of the Common Core
• Adapt writing demands to challenge all students, including special needs
• Use the Collins Writing Program as a school-wide effort for improving students’ cross-curricular literacy development 

Registration Fee: The fee is $150 per workshop if you register fourteen days or more before the date of the workshop, $175 thereafter.

Cancellation Policy: The entire tuition fee is fully refundable up to three business days prior to the workshop. Thereafter, a $25 cancellation fee will be charged.

No-risk Guarantee: If for any reason you are not happy with a workshop, we will gladly refund your participant fee.

Lunch: Lunch is on your own and is not included in the registration fee.
