Day One ~ Cybersex Use and Abuse: From Fantasy to Addiction

Workshop Description:

Internet addiction has become a serious mental health concern in many countries. While many individuals can engage in online behaviors with no serious consequences, there are specific pulls that lead many beyond the level of periodic pleasure to compulsive and addictive behaviors. While several of the same issues occur in terms of online gaming and gambling, this is particularly true regarding sexual activity, often referred to as cybersex.

This workshop provides in-depth information regarding the frequency of cybersex use by men, women, and teens, and information on why cybersex has been referred to as the next sexual revolution. Participants will learn the three specific reasons that make cybersex so appealing and engage in a discussion regarding whether or not these behaviors are actually an addiction. The impact of cyber sexual behaviors on the reward system will also be presented.
Participants will learn the components of assessment and current treatment recommendations for cybersex addiction. The program will also provide information on the impact of sexual addictions on the individual and family, in addition to guidelines to assist in the healing of trauma for partners confronting sexual addictions.

Learning Objectives:

This workshop is designed to help participants:

1. Describe both sides of the professional debate on whether or not internet addiction is a legitimate diagnosis and discuss implications for practice

2. Recognize and adequately describe the similarities of cybersex addiction to online gaming addiction

3. List the positive and negative effects of cybsersex

4. Discuss the impact of cybersex addiction on the reward circuitry of the brain

5. Select and utilize the appropriate components for adequately assessing cybersex addiction

6. Learn and successfully apply identified treatment techniques for cybersex addiction into their own practice

Day Two ~ Understanding Key Elements in Chronic Pain and Addiction: The Role of Behavioral Health Issues in Effective Treatment

Workshop Description:

The current ongoing media attention to the “opioid crisis” and the simplistic solutions recommended highlight the misunderstanding and misconceptions that exist among professionals and the public about pain, addiction, and their treatment.  A comprehensive understanding of these concepts is required for more effective treatment solutions, particularly for behavioral health and medical professionals. The goal of this workshop is to provide front-line clinicians and medical providers essential mastery of effective treatment approaches, particularly for those who treat complicated, chronic pain.

This workshop is designed for a multidisciplinary audience and will answer commonly asked questions regarding the nature of pain and current treatment options, the differences between acute and chronic pan, and the impact of trauma and psychosocial issues can have on the treatment of chronic pain. Participants will learn more about addiction, understanding the nuances between addiction and physical dependence, drug tolerance and pseudoaddiction. In addition to cultivating a solid knowledge base, participants will acquire the necessary tools to conduct risk assessments, identify compliant clients and patients, and approaches to actively engage them in treatment. Based on Dr. Jennifer Schneider’s extensive experience treating those with chronic pain, case examples will highlight illusions regarding -addiction and pain, and cultivate the necessary knowledge required to effectively understand and treat complicated pain.

Learning Objectives:

This workshop is designed to help participants:

1. Define pain and the difference between acute and chronic pain

2. Assess the role of psychosocial issues in chronic pain, including childhood and adult trauma

3. Utilize DSM-5 criteria to differentiate addiction, pseudoaddiction, and physical dependence

4. Understand and explain to clients the basic characteristics of opioids, including the difference between short-and long-acting drugs, their safety, and what compliance on the part of the patient consists of

5. List the elements of risk assessment when evaluating the role of opioids in chronic pain treatment and its outcome

6. Discuss the need for patient engagement in the treatment process in order to it to succeed

7. Design an effective approach for treating complicated/difficult chronic pain patients

Day 3 ~ Addiction: A Modern Perspective

Workshop Description:

Addiction has long been deeply misunderstood in both our culture and clinical practice. Rather than being a reflection of impulsivity or self-destructiveness, or a result of genetic factors, addiction can be shown to be a psychological mechanism that is a subset of psychological compulsion in general. This workshop will describe and illustrate a new way to understand and treat addictions. Attendees will also examine the effectiveness of 12-step programs, the rehabilitation industry, myths of addiction, how to distinguish true addictions from simple abuse, and other topics in order to arrive at a comprehensive modern appreciation of the nature of addiction and its treatment.

This workshop is designed for providers across multiple disciplines, including nurses, mental health nurses, psychologists, psychiatrists, therapists, addiction counselors, social workers, occupational therapists, and mental health staff.

Learning Objectives:

This workshop is designed to help participants:

1. List and discuss early psychoanalytic views of addiction

2. Describe and apply the relationship of addictions to compulsions

3. Describe the relative roles of physical and psychological factors in addiction

4. Explain and critique non-psychological adjunctive treatments for addiction

5. Summarize common myths of addiction

6. Recognize, define and apply differences between true addictions and non-addiction behaviors
