Following Dr. Cody's presentation, Dr. Jacquelyn Reinert will provide a brief overview of the research and theories examining the intersection of gender identity and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The prevalence, associated risk, challenges, and emerging clinical guidelines for affirmative assessment and treatment for adolescents will be discussed. Lastly, a short case presentation will provide the catalyst for break-out discussion regarding treatment recommendations.

In the last presentation, Devon Church will discuss various cultural aspects of the transgender experience. Potential clinical manifestations and implications for clinicians based on currently available research in the area of transgender health will be discussed. Challenges, barriers and opportunities presented by the experience of being transgender will be explored.

The Presenters:

Paul Cody, Ph.D. grew up in Connecticut and has lived all of his life in New England, other than time spent in San Francisco pursuing his PhD in clinical psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies. He worked for 28 years at the UNH Counseling Center. For 21 years, he taught a UNH course he had created, Social Work Practice with GLBT People. Paul is very happy to be now providing counseling and psychotherapy for clients at Equality Health Center. Besides seeing individuals for general mental health issues, he is a Gender Specialist and has a specialty in issues pertaining to sexual identity. Paul enjoys attending local Celtic music concerts and, in warm weather, riding his antique BMW motorcycle.

Jacquelyn Reinert, Psy.D., LMHC is a recent graduate of Rivier University and is a pediatric neuropsychology post-doctoral fellow at NESCA. Dr. Reinert has worked in a variety of clinical settings, including therapeutic schools, residential treatment programs and in community mental health providing individual and group therapy. She has comprehensive training in psychological assessment, conducting testing with children, adolescents, and transitional-aged adults with complex trauma. Prior to completing her doctoral studies, Dr. Reinert was a licensed mental health counselor who worked in a private therapeutic school setting conducting individual, group, and in-home family therapy with children and adolescents with complicated learning and psychiatric disabilities, and with their families. Dr. Reinert also taught modified health and sexual health curriculum for transitional aged young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder, learning and Intellectual disabilities, and global/pervasive developmental issues. She is passionate about providing a safe space for children and adolescents with complex needs, including sexual and gender issues.

Devon P. Church is a Rivier University student nearing completion of his M.Ed. in School Counseling. He is currently enjoying his internship experience at a local Manchester, NH middle school, as well as his work at the Rivier University Office of Disability Services. Devon’s experience in education and advocacy for the LGBT+ community began while he was himself, a middle school student. He worked with the Massachusetts Department of Education’s Safe School’s Program for Gay and Lesbian Youth from 1998 – 2011 as a speaker, panelist and moderator at various educational venues. Later, he served as the Co-Chair of Transgender New Hampshire from 2013 – 2015, of which he remains an active member. Prior to his studies at Rivier University, Devon worked in Healthcare Finance. During this time, he put himself through college, and later attended The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, obtaining a Graduate Certificate in the Fundamentals of Value Based Healthcare. This area of study greatly informed his perspective on the implications of intersectionality in patient-centered care models.

Rivier University students and faculty can attend the conference for $10.00. Registration includes light refreshments.
