About the Instructor

Dr. James Fleming serves as Director of Biblical Resource Study Center (BRSC), an ecumenical organization serving Christians around the world. He is also founder of the World of the Bible Archaeological Museum and Pilgrim Center, which operated at Ein Karem, Jerusalem until Spring of 2006. Dr. Fleming has established a similar archaeological museum at LaGrange, GA which opened in June 2006. Dr. Fleming holds an Ed.D. degree from Southwestern Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX and has taught classes in the School for overseas students at Hebrew University in Israel. He serves on the Editorial Advisory board of Biblical Archaeology Review and has contributed articles to this journal and led many archaeological tours for the magazine, which has the largest circulation of any publication in the field of archaeology. He has developed courses of study in historical geography and biblical history, uniquely tying the studies with the biblical text and emphasizing the wedding of theological/faith relationships. Teaching aids developed by Dr. Fleming are in use by theological institutions in Europe, Asia, and Africa. As a cartography consultant to the Curriculum Department of the Israeli Ministry of Education, he has illustrated government textbooks teaching biblical history with maps and photography. Dr. Fleming works with the Israeli Ministry of Tourism instructing Jewish and Arab guides about important New Testament and Byzantine period sites.

Topics will include...

  • The Assyrians Came Like a Wolf in the Fold
  • Isaiah and the Good King Hezekiah
  • Jeremiah's Doom and Hope
  • Archaeology and the Last Days of Judah
  • Archaeology and the Return from Captivity
  • Reversal of Fortune, Spirituality of the Return

Biblical Imagery and the Teachings of Jesus | September 14-16

It is important in biblical studies that one should not read a later way of thinking into an earlier text. In this conference we will explore "biblical imagery." In the Western mind, imagery is a photo image of what something looks like, but for the biblical mind imagery means "what things do and how things are used." This is known as functional thought. We will take a refreshing look at how the prophets and Jesus understood God working with their ancestors in very practical ways. We will examine biblical imagery from creation- from things such as the sea, water, rock, salt- and imagery from the body- things such as the heart, eyes, stomach, and tears.

Topics will include...

  • Imagery in Nature
  • Imagery in the Life of the Shepherd
  • Imagery in the Life of the Farmer
  • Imagery from Tabernacle, Temple and Synagogue
  • Imagery in the City
