I. Modern Studies in Genesis - Nov. 10-12, 2014

To get the full impact of the Creation Poem of Genesis I, it is necessary for us in the modern world to learn to think and to hear as did the ancient Hebrews. As we put ourselves in the place of those who first heard these foundational stories of our faith, we will grasp even more clearly how marvelous is our God and how God abundantly provides for God's people. By putting ourselves in their place, we will learn about where and how they lived. It was not an easy life nor a comfortable one; those who responded to God's call in Genesis were those who lived "on the margins." But they learned - as can we - that the God who called them, led them, and provided for them is a God who keeps promises.  

II. The Rest of the Story: The Lives of the Apostles - Nov. 12-14, 2014

a. Disciples and Apostles, b. The Twelve Apostles: Part I (Simon Peter, Andrew brother of Peter, James brother of John, and John brother of James), c. The Twelve Apostles: Part II (Philip, Bartholomew/Nathaniel, Matthew, Thomas, James the Less, SImon the Zealot, Thaddeus, Judas (not Iscariot), and Judas Iscariot), d. Apostles Not of the Twelve (James brother of Jesus, Barnabas, Paul, Timothy, Titus, and Mary mother of Jesus) 

The picture of the disciples - The Twelve - that we get from the gospels is not a picture of powerful, confident, or in any way remarkable people. Yet, after the crucifixion of Jesus, instead of returning to their earlier vocations, these disciples became witnesses to the Resurrection and played a major role in ensuring that Christianity became an enduring religion. Examine the characteristics of each of their lives - including Apostles who were not of the Twelve - as we hear "the rest of the story."

  Dr. James Fleming serves as Director of Biblical Resources Study Center (BRSC), which is  an ecumenical organization serving Christians around the world. He is also founder of the      World of the Bible Archaeological Museum and Pilgrim Center, which operated at Ein            Karem, Jerusalem, until Spring 2006. Dr. Fleming holds an Ed.D. degree from    Southwestern Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas, and has taught classes in the    School for Overseas Students at Hebrew University in Israel. He serves on the Editorial  Advisory Board of Biblical Archaeology Review and has contributed articles to this journal  and led many archaeological tours for the magazine. Teaching aids developed by Dr. Fleming are in use by theological institutions in Europe, Asia and Africa. He also works with the Israeli Ministry of Tourism instructing Jewish and Arab guides about important New Testament and Byzantine period sites.
