Fall Classes 2018

Connecting with Your Neighbors - Monday 1:00 – 3:00 PM, September 17 (One 2-hour session) Cost: $10

                Workshop Description:  There are several ways in our community that you can connect with your neighbors online.  Learn about Nextdoor, a social media site that is made up of your actual neighbors.  Learn the types of information posted on Nextdoor and how to make it work for you.  Also “Friends of Fallbrook” and “Real Friends of Fallbrook” will be discussed.  Instructor:  Obie Weeks

 

Alexa -   Thursday 9:30 – 11:30 AM September 20 (One 2-hour session) Cost: $10

        Workshop Description:  Learn what Alexa can do and how to set it up.  Alexa, also known as Echo or Amazon Dot, is "The Home Assistant" you never knew you needed and you will be surprised at all the things it can do.  Instructor:  Ted Kubitz

 

Home Safety - Thursday 1:00 – 3:00 PM, September 20 (One 2-hour session) Cost: $10

                Workshop Description:  As the electronic age is advancing so is home security.  Hear about new alarm systems, how to make your home a smart home.  There will also be a discussion medical alerts systems. Instructor:  Obie Weeks

 

Taking and Managing Photos on Your Android Smartphone - Mondays 9:30 - 11:30 AM, September 24 & October 1 (two one hour session) Cost: $20

Class Description:  This class is a basic tutorial on the camera application in your Android smartphone and how to take photos and modify them with photo editing apps.  The first session will cover the basic capabilities of the Android camera app. Discussion will include the various settings available in the app such as Auto, Panorama, Pro, Continuous and Sport. The various effects like Negative, Sepia and Grayscale will be reviewed. The second session will cover how to enhance the photo.  Gallery is an app that most phones have installed from the factory.  It allows modifications such as crop, rotate, effects, emojis and line drawing capabilities.  Once the desired photo has been finalized, Gallery provides ways to share the photo with others.  Free photo editing apps will also be discussed. Note: This class is not for iPhone or iPads.

What to Bring to Class:  The classroom has wireless Internet connection and students are required to bring in their Android devices for hands-on instruction.

 The “Cloud” Monday 1:00 - 3:00 PM, September 24 (One 2-hour session) Cost: $10

                Workshop Description:  You have heard about the Cloud and may have used it, but what really is it?  It is more than just a place to store things.  This workshop will look at the physical aspects of the cloud and how you can use it.  Safety and privacy will also be covered.  Instructor:  Rick York

Family Tree Maker / Genealogy - Thursdays 9:30 - 11:30 AM, September 27 & October 4, 11, & 18 (Four 2-hour sessions) Cost: $40

Class Description:  The class will include an introduction & search of the on-line genealogy sites (Including Ancestry.com) and a short course on the Family Tree Maker software.  We will be working with ancestry.com and you will need to get a subscription after class starts. (Ancestry gives you a two-week free trial). The last portion of the class will be dedicated to building & updating your Family Tree using Family Tree Maker and Ancestry.com.

What to Bring to Class:  - Laptop (either PC or Mac) to save your family tree on Family Tree Maker 2017 (a software package you can be given, or you can buy the latest version online.) If you don’t bring your laptop you will need to bring in a flash drive to transfer the software & file to your home desktop.  If you don’t have a laptop temporary use of a laptop will be available but please let us know in advance. If you use a mouse bring your mouse pad. Note: You could do your research on-line with a Smartphone or tablet, but it is significantly harder and slower - without the benefits of a larger screen and the ability to easily print results and charts.  Family Tree Maker is recommended as it is the leading Genealogy software and is linked to Ancestry.com. The results online and on your computer will always be in sync.  

Prerequisite:  Basic working knowledge of your computer

Solving Spreadsheet Problems - Thursday 1:00 – 3:00 PM, October 4 & 11 (Two 2-hour session). Cost: $20

Class Description: The class is designed to help you solve your problems using spreadsheets.  While the class will focus on desktop Excel, the knowledge learned will also be applicable to LibreOffice Calc, Excel for iPad and Google Sheets.  The instructor will contact each student before the class to ascertain the issues the student may want to discuss during the class.

What to Bring to Class:  If you have a laptop with spreadsheet software bring it.  If you use a mouse bring your mouse pad. 

Prerequisite:  Basic working knowledge of your computer and/or devices to be used.

Fix It Fridays- Every Friday from 1 - 3pm. Walk-ins welcome! Seniors seeking assistance in computer software and/or hardware problems should drop by. Donations are appreciated.  All staff are volunteers.
