Event Driven Hedge Funds Panel

You are cordially invited to join CAIA London at our upcoming Event Driven Hedge Funds Panel.   

Event-driven encompasses a wide range of hedge funds strategies including merger arbitrage, distressed debt, activists and special situations.

Speakers:

 Randy Freeman, CIO, Fortress Centaurus Global Fund

Randy has 20 years’ experience in global risk arbitrage and event driven investing. Before joining Fortress in 2014, Randy was the PM at Centaurus Capital between 2000 and 2014 (CIO between 2008 to 2014). Prior to that he worked from 1995 to 2000 on the Paribas European risk arbitrage desk, co-managing the business from 1997 to 2000. Previously, Randy spent six years at Goldman Sachs in the asset management and private banking businesses. He became a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) in 1990 and graduated with an MBA from the University of Chicago. 

James Thompson, Principal and head of European trading,  Taconic Capital

Mr. Thompson joined Taconic in December 2009 as a trader for the London office. In December 2010 he became a Director, and in January 2013 he became a Principal. Prior to joining Taconic, Mr. Thompson spent five years as a Director of Trading and Portfolio Management at KBC Alternative Investment Management in London, was a trader at Mako Global Derivatives, and a Strategic Consultant for Accenture Ltd. Mr. Thompson received his B.A. in Economics, with honors, from the University of Nottingham. 

John Stein, Managing Director and Senior Credit Client Portfolio Manager, Och-Ziff

Prior to joining Och-Ziff in 2013, Mr. Stein was a Managing Director in the Alternative Credit Strategy group at BlackRock. He also was a Partner at R3 Capital Partners. Prior to that, he worked at Lehman Brothers for eleven years where he held several positions in Fixed Income Capital Markets. Mr. Stein holds a B.S. in Quantitative Finance from James Madison University an M.B.A. from the Stern School of Business at New York University and is a CFA charterholder. 

Mr Khing D. Oei, CIO, Managing Partner, Ecyk Capital

Prior to founding Eyck, Khing worked at Halcyon, a $13 billion multi-strategy hedge fund, in London from 2006-2011. At Halcyon, he was a Managing Principal, Portfolio Manager and Investment Committee member on the firm’s credit platform, which he founded and managed in Europe. Prior to joining Halcyon, Khing worked at Fortress Investment Group’s Drawbridge Special Opportunities Fund in London. Before Fortress, Khing worked at Goldman Sachs in the European Special Situations Group, a multi-billion dollar proprietary investment group within Goldman Sachs’ Fixed Income, Currency and Commodities Division. 

Martin Beck, Partner and Senior Analyst, Sothic Capital

From January 2007 until August 2008, Mr Beck worked as an Analyst for JP Morgan’s proprietary European Distressed Group, led by Gertjan Koomen. Prior to this, he worked as an Analyst and later as an Associate for JPMorgan’s Principal Finance Team, focusing on principal investments in real estate backed non-performing loan portfolios.

Marco D’Attanasio, founding partner and CIO of Hadron Capital LLP

Hadron Capital LLP serves as investment manager to the Hadron Fund and the Hadron Alpha Select UCITS Fund. Both funds are managed with a multi-asset class event-driven style. Before founding Hadron Capital in 2004, Marco was a Managing Director at Royal Bank of Canada in London, responsible for the Europe and Asia Relative Value Group, a 10-person proprietary trading unit based in London and Hong Kong. Marco was at HSBC and JP Morgan before joining Royal Bank of Canada in 1998.

 

Luke Lynch, Deputy CIO, Oceanwood Capital Management 

Prior to founding Oceanwood with Christopher Gate in 2006, the two had worked together at Tudor since 2000. During his career, Luke has developed expertise in various skill sets including event-oriented research and trading equities, debt and derivatives. During his time at Tudor, Luke was the lead analyst for European event situations. Whilst at Tudor, Luke was also responsible for the event team’s primary risk management tools which focus on a combination of “stress tests” customized to the event strategy. As Oceanwood’s Deputy CIO he works very closely with Christopher Gate on overall portfolio strategy and risk, whilst leveraging his equity option trading skill set in both hedging and event situations in order to implement trades in an attractive risk-adjusted manner. Luke has represented Oceanwood’s interests in a variety of special situations that have involved the formation of both bondholder and shareholder groups. Luke has served as a guest lecturer on capital markets at Judge Business School, University of Cambridge.

Francois Langlade-Demoyen, CEO / CIO – Langlade Capital Advisors 

Prior to setting up Langlade Capital Advisors in 2014, Mr. Langlade-Demoyen was the CIO of Pamplona Capital Management’s Fund of Funds business, having joined in January 2008. Francois has nearly 30 years of experience in research and investment management. Prior to joining Pamplona, between 2004 and 2007 Mr. Langlade-Demoyen established and served as Chief Investment Officer of Langlade Capital Management LLP in London managing a European long short equity fund. Between 1999 and 2003 he was Partner and Co-Chief Investment Officer of the Buttonwood Long Short European Equity Fund. From 1994 to 1999 Mr. Langlade-Demoyen was in charge of European Equity Strategy and Co-Head of European Equity Research at Credit Suisse First Boston Ltd in London as Managing Director. From 1990 to 1994 he was a Director and Board Member of Credit Suisse First Boston France, based in Paris. Between 1987 to 1990 Mr. Langlade-Demoyen served as an Executive Director at Goldman Sachs in London responsible for French Equity Strategy. Prior to that he was a Financial Analyst at JP Morgan in Paris and New York.
