The Development of Psychoanalytic Theory

Theory, whether focused on the structure and functioning of the human psyche or on clinical techniques in the treatment room, has always been the driving force behind the art and science we call psychoanalysis.

Theory, whether focused on the structure and functioning of the human psyche or on clinical techniques in the treatment room, has always been the driving force behind the art and science we call psychoanalysis. Freud, of course, was the first and probably the greatest psychoanalytic researcher, and he provided a road map or guide about how to develop new ideas in psychoanalysis.  Following Freud’s model, Dr. Holmes discusses how she has used her personal history, the convergence of experiences in her life, clinical material she has gathered in the laboratory of her treatment room, and focused research to create new ideas in psychoanalysis.

The participants will learn to:

  1. Realize the value of mining personal history and life experience to inspire and motivate psychoanalytic research.
  2. Analyze clinical process, what the patient actually says, to find themes, answer questions, and create new ideas about psychic functioning.
  3. Test and validate new theories, moving forward, by a continued focus on clinical process to study if the theoretical hypotheses we are working with are confirmed by the new thoughts and feelings verbalized by our patients.
