Theory, whether focused on the structure and functioning of the human psyche or on clinical techniques in the treatment room, has always been the driving force behind the art and science we call psychoanalysis. Freud, of course, was the first and probably the greatest psychoanalytic researcher, and he provided a road map or guide about how to develop new ideas in psychoanalysis. Following Freud’s model, Dr. Holmes discusses how she has used her personal history, the convergence of experiences in her life, clinical material she has gathered in the laboratory of her treatment room, and focused research to create new ideas in psychoanalysis.
