Keep Scenic Drive Beautiful is organized by Friends of the Scenic Drive in support of the City of Scottsdale's Adopt-a-Road program. Friends has been participating in the Adopt-a-Road program since 1994 and is responsible for the northern section of Scottsdale Road, known as the Desert Foothills Scenic Drive, which stretches from Carefree Highway to Happy Valley Road, a distance of 6 1/2 miles. New volunteers are welcome.
New Volunteers Are Welcome
Let's face it, litter is not everybody's cup of tea. Change is a hallmark of our community and new volunteers are needed to replace those who move away or find something else to do with their spare time. Join 20 to 30 other residents and enjoy a sense of comraderie and satisfaction as together, we keep the 51-year-old tradition of the Scenic Drive alive, and clear 13 miles of roadside of litter.
It's Easy to Pitch-In
There are two sign-in locations, where volunteers are welcomed, sign-in, get instructions and supplies, and are assigned the section of roadside for which they are responsible. Friends provides safety vests, pickup "sticks," and plastic trash bags. Complimentary coffee, donuts, and water are available. It is recommended that volunteers wear gloves and long pants. When the pickup ends, volunteers return safety vests and pickup sticks to the sign-in location. The litter that volunteers collect is left in plastic bags on the side of the road. It is picked up by Scottsdale's Waste Management Department the following Monday.
Convenient Sign-in Locations
Veteran volunteers man two sign-in locations.
Special Events for Vounteers
This cleanup will be like all the previous ones except there will be two special activities to thank past volunteers and attract new ones.
#1. COMPLIMENTARY DRAWINGS for movie tickets and admission to the Cave Creek Museum. When you sign-in on Saturday, you will ge given tickets.
#2. PHOTO SHOOT by professional film director Peter Cherry. Peter will take a group photo at the monument sign of all the volunteers who show up at the cleanup. The photo will be published in The Peak.
These two optional activities are expected no longer than 20 minutes. Also, note that during the cleanup volunteer Cindy Lee will be photographing volunteers at work. If she is able to get enough good photos, they will be incorporated into a video that we can use to promote future Scenic Drive cleanups.
HELP US SPREAD THE WORD AND THE WORK LOAD. PLEASE TELL YOUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS ABOUT THIS SPECIAL CLEANUP.
