Programming in Scratch

Make a Holiday Card

Create a game design lab in your home!  Invite a few of your child's friends over to work collaboratively or have your child work alone with an online coach that encourages, instructs, and enables them to create a digital artifact and start creating an online portfolio of games, animations, and programs they created!

Available to all ages!  Join Dr. Ellen online for three Fridays to create a Holiday Card.  We will begin by collecting a short description from a grandparent or loved one of a favorite holiday moment. We will upload this description to Scratch, then animate it with sprites, custom backgrounds, and special effects. Participants not only create a keepsake for the family, they will also receive a free, password protected online GrowaGen portfolio, earn a Mozilla OBI Badge and learn some basic programming skills.

About Scratch

Scratch is a programming language and an online community where children can program and share interactive media such as stories, games, and animation with people from all over the world. As children create with Scratch, they learn to think creatively, work collaboratively, and reason systematically. Scratch is designed and maintained by the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab.

While Scratch is primarily designed for 8 to 16 year olds, it is also used by people of all ages, including younger children with their parents.

What is a GrowaGen Lab

Grow a Generation Logo

GrowaGen Labs can be set up in your home, classroom, or community resource room. While we encourage collaboration and that you invite one or two friends to join your child, they may also work solo to learn the skills they need to become STEM Athletes, Digital Storytellers, and World Changers.

Participants not only create a digital artifact that becomes part of their portfolio, they can also receive a free, password protected online GrowaGen portfolio and earn Mozilla OBI Badges.

While many of the skills they can learn are available free online, we believe that some students respond best with a coach, a deadline, and a goal. Online coaches use positive reinforcement, gentle reminders, and frequent motivational “level ups” to support meaningful goals.
