Supporting LGBT Elders: Listening to Their Voices

This session will provide participants with basic information about the LGBTQ community, define important terms, and provide facts about LGBT elders and the unique challenges they face. The lives of today’s LGBT elders will be put in historical context. Time for discussion and questions with a panel of LGBT elders is built into the agenda, so that we can talk about the potential harm done by stereotypes and misinformation and we can explore best practices for creating safe spaces.

Presented by:

Havens Levitt
GLSEN Albuquerque

Havens Levitt is a native New Mexican, retired high school math teacher, and life-long civil rights advocate. She is a white, middle-class, cisgender lesbian. She has served on the Equality New Mexico board and is currently chair of GLSEN Albuquerque. She has witnessed the enormous changes that have taken place in attitudes and support for members of the LGBTQ community from the early 1970’s to today. Her current work with SAGE Albuquerque (Advocacy and Services for LGBT Elders) is informed by her own experiences over 6 decades: as a young adult, a teacher, a lesbian activist, a social justice advocate, a daughter taking care of elderly parents, and now as someone having reached “senior” status at age 66 – looking into the future with some trepidation.
