Accessing School Social Work Related Services, Student Civil Rights Update (cultural)

*CULTURAL

This is a 2.0 hour session.

This presentation is designed to explore and analyze the effects of systemic/internalized oppression within the New Mexico educational system, emphasizing Special Education, School Social Work, and Related Services. We will explore the development of a more open and inclusive educational system through an awareness of oppression and present-day barriers and challenges regarding our public education system both historically and during the COVID-19 pandemic. We will view the historical "school to prison" pipeline and the evolutionary effect on people of color, those with disabilities, and other marginalized individuals. Topics include a historical evolutionary perspective of the educational system in America regarding the 504 Plan, IDEA, IEP's and Related Services. Additionally, we will explore the need for Special Education Services and Related Service support with a brief overview of the Federal, State and local laws that govern our practice as School Social Work.

Presented by:

I'm a Clinical School Social Worker, for the largest school district in New Mexico, with over 29 years' experience. In addition, I have a private practice specializing in work with children, adolescents, young adults, and geriatrics. I've focused my School Social Work career in the service of Title 1 schools predominantly on the West and South West side of the greater Albuquerque area. I'm a Native New Mexican: Hispanic, Native Yaqui, and Sephardic Jew. I evolve from the complex nature of the original founding New Mexico families: the good, the bad, the ugly! I strongly believe the key to unlocking the chains of poverty is through education! I believe education is a unique and individual experience for each child, whether by book or experience. Education can never be taken nor diminished, only lost.
