Beyond Inclusion: Changing Environments to be More Affirming to LGBTQ+ People (cultural)

*CULTURAL

This is a 2.0 hour session.

Behavioral health settings’ mistreat of the LGBTQ+ community in the past and present has left many transgender and queer people feeling uneasy or unsafe about seeking services. Many clinicians want to serve the LGBTQ+ community but may have questions about how to best communicate this. In this presentation, we will go through each room of a clinic or agency, from the waiting room to the therapist’s office, and discuss best practices for showing consideration for the LGBTQ+ community. We will also discuss how organizational policies, intake forms, and company websites communicate support for queer and transgender health equity. This presentation will then focus in on the unequal burden of tobacco and nicotine on queer and transgender populations a social justice issue.

Presented by:

Alex maintains Bright Spaces, Welcome Places, a directory of mental health agencies that affirm LGBTQ+ people’s lives. Alex serves as co-chair for New Mexico Allied Council on Tobacco. She earned her BA from the University of New Hampshire and her MFA from the Vermont College of Fine Arts.
Kenneth Winfrey, LCSW (he/him) earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, a Writing Certificate, and a minor in Public Speaking from the University of Missouri at St. Louis. Kenneth founded Umoja Behavioral Health, PC which provides yoga-based culturally resonant care to clients from a wide variety of backgrounds, identities, and statuses.
