08-14-19 Future Battery Chemistries and Advanced Diagnostic Tools for Battery Research

Our August Presentation: Rechargeable batteries are central to moving from fossil fuels to renewable sources of energy. They are needed for the electrification of transportation and building smart grids. To enable this transition, cheaper batteries with a higher energy density and a longer cycle life are needed. Dr. Clément will focus on strategies to improve the performance of various types of batteries for specific applications. She will also describe advanced characterization tools used to identify failure mechanisms during operation.

August 2019

Our Speaker: Dr. Raphaële Clément, Assistant Professor, Materials Department, UCSBDr. Clément received her B.A. and M.Sc. in Natural Sciences in 2012, as well as her Ph.D. in Chemistry in 2016, from the University of Cambridge. Her Ph.D. project, supervised by Professor Clare Grey, focused on the study of cathode materials for sodium-ion battery applications. She then joined the group of Professor Gerbrand Ceder at UC Berkeley as a postdoctoral fellow, where she developed both experimental and computational skills applicable to a range of electrochemical materials. She joined the faculty of the Materials Department at UCSB in July 2018. Her current research interests are the study of structural and redox processes in electrochemical materials using magnetic resonance techniques.
