Machine Learning in the Sciences and Engineering: Challenges and Opportunities

Our March Presentation: There have been many exciting developments recently in the fields of data science and machine learning. Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Image Processing (IP) are advancing rapidly. However, problems faced in science and engineering often have different requirements and inherent structures than those typically solved with NLP and IP. This talk will survey trends and emerging areas in machine learning, along with challenges and opportunities they provide in the sciences and engineering.

Our Speaker: Dr. Paul J. Atzberger, Professor, UCSB Mathematics and UCSB Mechanical Engineering, studied mathematics at the Courant Institute at New York University where he received his PhD. Subsequently, he was a postdoctoral fellow at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He joined the faculty at the University of California Santa Barbara in 2006. His research is in the areas of computation, numerical methods, stochastic analysis, and their applications in the sciences and engineering. He also has related research interests in data science and machine learning.

Please reserve by the Monday before the meeting: A reservation allows SEC to provide the restaurant an accurate guarantee of meal amounts and results in faster service. When reserving, make a meal choice. You can pay in advance by credit card or at the door with check or cash. Remember you are always welcome as a walk-in member or guest without a reservation.

Meal Choices: All meals are the same price. Please choose one when you reserve, to provide a count for the restaurant. Pay when you reserve, or walk-in and pay at the door.

From our Co-Presidents Tim Murphy and Gary Kravetz:

The Santa Barbara County Science Fair takes place on Friday, March 15 at UCSB. They need judges with a background in science that morning. Go to http://sbsciencefair.org/contact.php to volunteer.

All members and guests are encouraged to contribute
to the SEC scholarship program!
Contact a board member at an SEC meeting, send email to the SEC,
or simply visit our new web page and use the direct donation button. However you do it, the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara handles the actual fund and awards.
Donations may be tax-deductible.
