09-12-18 Life and Near Death Experiences at the Cellular Level 

Our September Presentation:  
Dr. Denise Montell's lab at UCSB has discovered that many different types of cells can recover from the brink of death, which has implications for cancer and degenerative diseases. They are currently investigating the mechanisms that allow this remarkable recovery, so that they can be harnessed for medical treatments.


Our Speaker:   
Professor Denise Montell is an internationally recognized and award-winning cell and developmental biologist. She is a Distinguished Professor of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She earned her B. A. in Biochemistry and Cell Biology from UCSD and completed her Ph.D. in Neurosciences at Stanford University. After postdoctoral studies at the Carnegie Institution, she climbed the academic ladder at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and together with husband Craig Montell (also a Distinguished Professor at UCSB) raised two amazing children: the author and pop linguist Amanda Montell and Google computer scientist Brandon Montell. In 2013, professors Montell traded in their view of East Baltimore for one of the Pacific Ocean and returned to their roots at the University of California.
