07-13-16 Under the Hood: Team 5818's FIRST Robot
Our July Presentation:
A new FIRST Robotics team, Riviera Robotics, was formed this year by 22 high school students. After the Dos Pueblos Engineering Academy replaced its world-renowned robotics program with a Mechatronics program, these determined students wouldn't take "No" for an answer.
Students from multiple high schools banded together. Within 6 months, they had applied for 501(c)(3) status, raised over $40,000, secured a build facility (a barn), and found a machine shop. They stayed up until midnight designing, machining, and coding a competitive robot for the FIRST Robotics competition. This year they competed at the Ventura regionals and finished as finalists. They then went on to Boise, Idaho and were the top rookie team, which allowed them to compete in the FIRST World Championship in St. Louis.
The game, FIRST Stronghold, required robots to breach their opponent's fortifications--including a portcullis, drawbridge, and moat--and shoot balls into and climb the opponent's castle. Come see their robot up close, watch it in action, and learn about the design choices made in developing it.
