Silicon Photonics: Transforming Data Centers
Our December Presentation: Photonics aims to use the photon in the same way that electronic applications use the electron. The silicon photonics field is advancing rapidly, and many new devices are being introduced. In fact, the performance of silicon photonics devices is now approaching that of devices on native indium phosphide substrates.
This talk will focus on recent developments in active devices--such as lasers, modulators, amplifiers and photodetectors. Over 160 devices have been integrated onto a single waveguide for applications such as integrated transmitters for data communications and telecommunications. Such waveguides can also be used in phased array radars and LiDAR. Recent research has yielded a number of promising ways to minimize the dislocations that affect thresholds and power after photonics device aging, including the use of intermediate buffer layers, quantum well lasers, and quantum dot lasers.
Our Speaker: At UCSB, Dr. John Bowers holds the Fred Kavli Chair in Nanotechnology and is the Director of the Institute for Energy Efficiency and a Professor in the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Materials. He is a cofounder of Aurrion, Aerius Photonics, and Calient Networks. Dr. Bowers received his MS and Ph.D. from Stanford University and worked for AT&T Bell Laboratories and Honeywell before joining UCSB. Dr. Bowers is a recipient of the OSA/IEEE Tyndall Award, the OSA Holonyak Prize, and the South Coast Business and Technology Entrepreneur of the Year Award. In addition to his many publications, he has received 54 patents.
