Groundwater Supplies, the Drought and Conservation

Our November Presentation:  This month's topic is groundwater and its important role in avoiding a major water emergency. The Goleta Water District is blessed with a substantial amount of groundwater to fill in for the lack of water in local surface reservoirs. The wells, pumps, and tanks used to remove water from the groundwater basin have been offline for 20 years or more and require engineering and equipment in order to bring them up to the established regulatory standards. Once these upgrades are complete, the District will be able to meet most of the demand. There are some important exceptions which will be discussed. Conservation will make a difference and seems to be the most effective path to reducing demand.

Our Speaker: Tom Evans has been the Chief Engineer for the Goleta Water District for over three years. Prior to that, he worked in the Santa Barbara public works community as a consulting engineer for over 30 years. His previous assignments include the position of City Engineer for the cities of Carpinteria (25 years), Solvang (17 years), and Buellton (15 years). He started his career as a water resources planner for the County of Santa Barbara and performed the studies required for the initial vote on State Water in 1979. With his job at Goleta Water District, he has come full circle in his career, working to keep the community supplied with water during extended drought conditions.
