This presentation will discuss the origins and predispositions of emerging public health challenges, highlighting how they are related to how we live in a global society. Advances in technology that allows recognition of conditions and relationships that could not be identified in the past will also be described as well as recent diseases in the news, including acute flaccid myelitis (AFM), foodborne illnesses and Zika virus with a review of the epidemiology and context in which they occur
Program Objectives:
1. Discuss the factors that favor increased risk for emerging infections
2. Describe how advances in laboratory and information technology make identification of infection and outbreaks more likely
3. Explain acute flaccid myelitis and Zika virus disease are examples of the factors that make outbreaks more readily identified and appreciated.
