ABOUT THE "Jacobean Applique" Quilt and Its Creation:

The design being offered this year is a Jacobean Applique (Jack" ubee' un) which is derived from Jacobus Britannia Rex, the formal title of seventeenth century English King James I. He is the king of the King James Version of the Bible. Jacobean embroidery is usually floral or arboreal. The design, Romantica, created by Patricia Campbell, incorporates the Jacobean antique designs in new Jacobean designs.

The Quilters are seven Ojai women who are devoted to using their skills to create these beautiful works of art while simultaneously raising money for local non-profit organizations such as the Ojai Valley Community Hospital Foundation and the Ojai Valley Museum. Each year only one quilt is produced as it is a very time consuming process. The quilt is then offered to the public through an auction or raffle.

The process to create a quilt begins with the quilters deciding on the applique design, then the fabric is purchased and each member then chooses a design template. Designs are traced onto freezer paper, then the pieces are cut out and ironed onto the varying color choices. Each piece is basted prior to stitching on the background fabric in the appropriate design. Following the completion of each design square, the quilters decide on the most visually appealing placement of the squares. Each applique is handsewn which requires many hours of needle work. The final process is quilting the applique to batting and background fabric which has been created on each quilt by Dee Angus, a professional quilter, who uses a long arm machine. The final step is the sewing the binding onto the outer edges.

These wonderful legacy pieces of art are designed to compliment any decor and can be either mounted for display on a wall or utilized as a gorgeous bed cover.
