From the Classroom to the Boardroom: A Discussion on What Today's Engineers Need to Succeed in the Realworld

DESCRIPTION:

This college night event is open to students and professionals alike.  The evening will include:

(a) A Student/Professional networking period

(b) A short Student presentation

(c) A Panel Discussion

The highlight of the event will be the panel discussion, giving the students in attendance an idea of what the structural engineering industry is all about from the perspective of practicing engineers.  Panelists will be answering questions, and students are encouraged to actively participate in the panel discussion by coming prepared with any questions they may have for the panelists!

 

PANELISTS:

Melissa Boulden, PE - MacIntosh Engineering

Melissa works for MacIntosh Engineering as a Senior Project Manager.  MacIntosh Engineering is a structural engineering firm with (3) offices in Wilmington, DE, Wayne, PA, and Lewes, DE. Melissa has been with MacIntosh Engineering since 2008 and previously worked at KCI Technologies in Hunt Valley, MD for a year prior to joining MacIntosh Engineering.  Melissa is a graduate of the University of Delaware, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering in 2005 and a Master of Civil Engineering degree in 2007. Melissa is a licensed professional engineer and LEED AP BD+C accredited. Melissa has worked on many challenging projects, including the Wilmington Hospital Expansion in Wilmington, Delaware, the Hilton Home 2 Suites in Philadelphia, PA, University of Maryland Campus Building in Fredericksburg, Virginia, The University of Delaware Bookstore, in Newark, DE, the STAR Campus in Newark, DE, St. Andrew’s Gymnasium/Field house in Middletown, DE, and STC Phase II at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, PA.  In her free time, Melissa volunteers as a mentor for the ACE Mentoring Program Delaware Chapter, and enjoys spending time with her husband and two kids.

Catherine ChiaCalabria, PE - McCormick Taylor 

Catherine is a registered Professional Engineer with nearly 30 years of experience in the design and construction of transportation structural facilities.  Her extensive experience includes steel and prestressed concrete bridges, culverts, retaining walls, noise walls, sign structures, load capacity ratings for bridges, bridge rehabilitation, and seismic retrofit design.  Catherine works for McCormick Taylor in their Philadelphia office where she is the Structures Group Manager.  Her work includes projects for DelDOT, PennDOT, New Jersey DOT, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission.  Catherine holds a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Civil Engineering from Drexel University and is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the American Society of Highway Engineers.  Catherine was named Structural Engineer of the Year by the Philadelphia Section of ASCE in 2003.  She was co-author of ASCE’s 2014 Report Card for Pennsylvania’s Infrastructure – Bridges.  Catherine has been a partner in the Pennsbury School District’s annual K thru 12 career fair for the last 13 years.  Pennsbury is situated in Lower Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

Niki Eno, PE - FIGG Bridge Engineers

Niki is a Bridge Engineer with FIGG Bridge Engineers in Exton, PA. Niki received a B.S and M.S. in Civil Engineering with a focus in structures from the University of Delaware in 2005 and 2007, respectively. During undergrad, Niki was an active member of ASCE student chapter and was heavily involved in the revival of the Concrete Canoe at UD. Niki’s graduate work consisted of "Delaware’s First Permanently Instrumented Bridge". Prior to starting her current position at FIGG Bridge Engineers in 2013, Niki worked as a structural engineer at Ammann & Whitney in Philadelphia, PA since 2007. Niki’s work at Ammann & Whitney consisted mainly of rehabilitation and design of PennDOT highway bridges in Pennsylvania. Currently, Niki is specializing in the field of Concrete Segmental Bridge Design at FIGG Bridge Engineering.

Jason Hastings, MCE, PE - DelDOT

Jason is the State Bridge Design Engineer for Delaware.  Jason has 14 years of experience in the public and private sectors, most of it managing and designing bridge replacement and rehabilitation projects for the Delaware Department of Transportation.  Jason has served as a member for Delaware on the AASHTO Subcommittee for Bridges and Structures since 2011.  As part of that committee, he serves on two technical subcommittees, T-13 on Culverts and T-19 on Software and Technology, as well as the AASHTO Flexible Culvert Liaison Committee that brings industry, consultants, and state DOT’s together. He received a Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree in 2000 and a Master of Civil Engineer degree in 2001, both from the University of Delaware. In 2012, Jason was named the Delaware Young Engineer of the Year by the Delaware Engineering Society. 

Dustin Schopen, PE - Modjeski and Masters

Dustin is a project engineer at Modjeski and Masters in Philadelphia, PA.  Modjeski and Masters specializes in bridge design, rehabilitation, and inspection with ten offices nationwide.  Dustin obtained his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering with structural and geotechnical emphases from the University of Wisconsin – Platteville in 2008 and his master’s degree in civil engineering with an emphasis on structural engineering from the University of Delaware in 2010.  Following graduate school, Dustin joined Modjeski and Masters and has been there for five years.  In that time, he has worked on a large variety of projects ranging from small rehabs to new long span bridges.  His tasks are generally focused on design work, though he occasionally serves as an inspector.  Dustin currently lives in the Philadelphia suburbs with his wife and daughter.

Neil Shemo, PE - AECOM

Neil is a senior project manager and associate vice president with over 24-years of engineering experience.  He works in AECOM’s Mechanicsburg Office and has served multiple clients including DelDOT, PennDOT, Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, SEPTA and Delaware River Port Authority.  Neil obtained his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Penn State and his Master of Science in Civil Engineering from Cal State.

Mark Wisniewski - AECOM

Mark is a structural engineer with AECOM in Philadelphia, PA. He graduated from the University of Delaware in 2015, earning a Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree with Honors, and began work with AECOM shortly thereafter. During his time as an undergraduate student, Mark interned through UD’s co-op program with AECOM in the summers of 2012, 2013, and 2014 and also with Pennoni Associates during the winter of 2015. Currently, Mark is pursuing his Master of Science in Civil Engineering with a Structural Engineering focus at Villanova University while working full-time at AECOM. Mark has had the opportunity to be involved with various bridge and structural projects at AECOM and is looking to obtain his P.E. in a few years. Having been largely involved with ASCE and other engineering student organizations at UD, Mark is enjoying staying involved with professional organizations.
