Guardians of the Grasslands - Regina Screening 

Prairie Conservation Action Plan, Saskatchewan Forage Council, Saskatchewan Soil Conservation Association and Saskatchewan Stockgrowers Association are pleased to present a screening of "Guardians of the Grasslands", a 12-minute film focusing on the peril of the temperate grasslands as one of the most imperiled biomes in the world, and the value of the grasslands in terms of wildlife habitat and carbon sequestration. 

We are pleased to be working with our partners Ducks Unlimited Canada, The Saskatchewan Cattlemen's Association and Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation.

The movie will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Jocleyn Velestuk, Chair Saskatchewan Soil Conservation Association, with panelists:

Ross McDonald 

98 Ranch Inc. is owned and operated by Ross and his wife and located in Southern Saskatchewan. It is a cow/calf/yearling operation built on a foundation of rangeland health and low input cattle selection.

There are a herd of registered Herefords and a commercial Hereford x Angus herd that are managed together and are selected to thrive under a variety of grazing situations and limited supplemental feed. The focus is designed to allow these cattle to generate profit through grazing and converting forages into beef. 

Jodie Horvath

Jodie is an Agrologist with Ducks Unlimited Canada, based in Wadena. This involves working with ranchers and farmers to promote healthy grasslands as nesting habitat for waterfowl.  Jodie is passionate about agriculture, the natural landscape and all those that share it.

She received a degree in Agriculture from the University of Saskatchewan. Raised on a grain and cattle farm near Ituna, Jodie feels privileged to raise her 3 kids together with her husband Lindsay on their farm at Kelliher. Rural living and all that comes with it is an important part of Jodie’s life.

Eric Lamb 

Dr. Eric Lamb is an Associate professor in the Department of Plant Science, University of Saskatchewan. He is a plant ecologist with expertise and research interests in fields including rangeland ecology and management, the development of complex forage mixtures, statistical ecology, and plant-soil interactions.

He holds a BSc. from UBC, and MSc. from Lakehead University, and a PhD. in grassland ecology from the University of Alberta. He has successfully supervised or co-supervised 10 graduate students and has published more than 60 peer reviewed papers including papers in leading journals such as Ecology, Journal of Ecology, and Rangeland Ecology and Management. Dr. Lamb’s research is currently focussed on plant-soil interactions and grassland fire ecology. Current projects include a collaboration with the Nature Conservancy studying the reintroduction of fire at Old Man on His Back, and a project examining the recovery of rangeland productivity after the 2017 Hilda – Burstall fires.
