Transitioning to Supervision:

Three-Day, First-Line Supervisor Development Course

 

Course Description:

Give your supervisory staff the knowledge they need to be successful! 

The shift from a patrol officer to a first-line supervisor has many challenges. The new supervisory officer has to not only navigate these encounters but also effectively handle normal, daily activities effectively.  This three-day program instructs new supervisors, or those soon to be promoted, with the essential aspects of becoming a supervisor and effectively handling these tasks. 

Our three-day course is specifically designed to move beyond theory and provide practical application of critical skills and abilities necessary for your supervisors to have to protect themselves, their officers and their agencies from the liability of ineffective leadership.  

 

Day 1: 

  • Orientation
  • Effective Communication
  • Making the Shift from Follower to Leader
  • Followership - Getting initial direction from your boss 
  • Setting the Tone: "initial counseling" with your new squad 
  • Managing Change: The first 30-days and Organizational Change
  • Roll Call Overview (assignments, dissemination of information, selection of training topics, how/what to train)
  • Essentials of Report Review 
  • Digital Evidence Review
  • Monitoring your Workforce
  • Initial Officer Critique & Assessment
  • Counseling & Documentation
  • Identifying future leaders, mentoring and rewarding your quality employees 

Day 2: 

  • Supervisory Response to Critical Incidents (barricades, EDP, Suicidal Individuals, and more.) 
  • After-Action meetings with your squad
  • Monitoring Employees after critical incidents
  • Critical Incident Stress Debriefing 
  • EAP - What is it & When to Use it
  • Cumulative Stress from non-traumatic incidents

Day 3: 

  • Critical Issues Currently Facing Your Staff
  • Common Solutions for Problem Employee Issues and Documentation (lateness, production, verbal confrontations, failure to properly follow orders, etc)
  • Insubordination (what is it and how to handle it)
  • Deviant Behavior identification and documentation
  • Investigation and documentation of employee crashes and/or injuries
  • Managing Civilians
  • Media Relations & Setting the Narrative
  • The Importance of Continuing Education 
  • Essentials of Networking
  • Certificate Presentation
