Last year’s recipient of a $4500 literary grant from Access Copyright Foundation, Hal Niedzviecki will speak on the process of applying for grants and the follow through involved once a grant has been awarded.
He is a writer, speaker, culture commentator and author of eight books, including the The Peep Diaries: How We’re Learning to Love Watching Ourselves and Our Neighbors, which was made into a television documentary. He is the current fiction editor and the founder of Broken Pencil, the magazine of zine culture and the independent arts. His writing has appeared in newspapers, periodicals and journals across the world including the New York Times Magazine, Playboy, the Utne Reader, the Globe and Mail, the National Post, Toronto Life, Walrus, Geist, and This Magazine.
Michael Schellenberg will give us an overview of the Ontario Arts Council grants available to writers. He has been involved in Canada’s cultural scene for the past 20 years and is currently the Literature Officer at the Ontario Arts Council.
He has worked as an editor, publisher, curator, writer and creative producer with Alfred A. Knopf Canada, Penguin Canada and John Wiley and Sons. He has worked with Anne Murray, Jann Arden, Peter Mansbridge Christopher Plummer, and others. Michael edited Will Ferguson’s Happiness TM, which won the Stephen Leacock Award for Humour and was published in over 30 countries. He was also Miriam Toews’ editor on the bestselling A Complicated Kindness.
Diane Davy will provide a short "Grant 101" - how to interpret grant terminology, what you should and shouldn't say and general tips on writing a successful grant application.
Diane has over 25 years of experience with business and marketing strategies for cultural industries, including book and magazine publishing. Prior to founding her marketing firm, Castledale Inc., she was President of Key Porter Books Ltd, an internationally respected Canadian publisher of adult and children's fiction and non-fiction, and President and Publisher of Greey de Pencier/OWL Books, creators of award-winning Canadian children’s books and Publisher of the OWL group of children’s magazines. Now, in addition to consulting on marketing and business management, Diane teaches at the Humber Creative Book Publishing Program.
