2014 Virginia Coastal Partners Workshop:

Assessing Past Progress, Planning the Future

Please join us for an interactive workshop for Virginia coastal partners and constituencies, including regional, local and state agencies, academic institutions, non-governmental organizations and all those who help manage and protect Virginia’s coastal resources. The 2016-2020 Coastal Zone Enhancement Program process will begin this fall. The workshop will provide an overview of the status of Virginia’s coastal resources and resource management efforts.

Participants will have an opportunity to “vote” whether topics are a high, medium or low priority and then brainstorm ideas for 5-year strategies for high priority topics.  This feedback will be provided to the CZM Program’s Coastal Policy Team for consideration at their February 3rd meeting.

The workshop will be organized around the following topics:

coastal hazards
public access
ocean resources & marine debris
aquaculture
energy facility siting
cumulative and secondary impacts of coastal growth and development
special area management plans
wetlands

The session for each topic will include review of a Phase 1 (or high level) assessment of the topic and recent related work followed by presentations and ranking of the topic - high, medium or low.

On day 2, all nine topic rankings will be reviewed and a maximum of 3 topics will be selected for development of Phase 2 (in-depth) Assessments as well as development of 5 year grant strategies that will lead to new enforceable policies to enhance management on that topic. Workshop participants will self-select topical groups, discuss data needs for completion of a Phase 2 assessment and brainstorm strategy ideas.  Each group will present their ideas and a final vote will be taken as to which strategies to recommend to the Virginia CZM Coastal Policy Team for consideration.  Next steps will be discussed for meeting the May 1, 2015 deadline for submitting draft strategies to NOAA.
