Presented by: Dr. Eliana Gil

Eliana Gil is currently semi-retired and owns Gil Institute for Trauma Recovery and Education in Fairfax, VA (with partner Myriam Goldin). She consults, teaches, supervises, and currently sees adult clients and/or parents. Dr. Gil has worked in the field of child abuse and neglect (childhood trauma) since 1973 and has implemented several child abuse treatment programs in VA (Inova Kellar Center, and Childhelp) as well as California (Gil and Associates).  She lives in Florida and has four grandchildren under the age of 15.  She has authored several books on treating children using expressive therapies and her passions are play therapy and family play therapy, particularly as they apply to the treatment of childhood trauma.

Workshop Description:
This workshop will explore how traumatized children can access their inner resources to address their past injuries. Since one of the most distressing components of trauma is profound helplessness, this type of play emerges, fueled by children’s resiliency. Thus, post traumatic play is the child’s natural “gradual exposure,” which often allows them to face their injuries from the safe enough distance of play. The different types of post trauma play will be identified as well as ideas for working with post trauma play that doesn’t meet its’ intended goal.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

1.  Define the term post traumatic play;
2.  List two characteristics of post traumatic play that allows clinicians to differentiate from other forms of play;
3.  Name two ways to identify “dynamic” post traumatic play that meets the overall goals of reparation;
4.  Name two ways to identify “toxic” post traumatic play that becomes stuck;
5.  Name three benefits of post traumatic play.
