Project Access and Writing in the Disciplines (WID) and Promoting Success in Math
DeafTEC
The National Science Foundation's Advanced Technological Education program has provided funding to establish DeafTEC: Technological Education Center for Deaf and Hard-of Hearing Students. DeafTEC is located at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, one of nine colleges of Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY.
DeafTEC serves as a resource for middle and high schools and community colleges that educate deaf and hard-of-hearing students in STEM-related programs and for employers hiring deaf and hard-of hearing individuals. It also establishes a model within targeted regions of the country to create partnerships among high schools, community colleges, and industry to improve access to technological education and employment for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.
Presenters: Sue Clark, Lauren Fox, Billie Joe Mayo, Brent Bechtold, and Harry Wood
Workshop
Writing in the Disciplines and Promoting Student Success in Math workshops are designed to help secondary teachers adapt their teaching style to foster better learning for students who are deaf or hard of hearing, as well as all other students, particularly those with language difficulties. These strategies are based upon research conducted by the Rochester Institute of Technology and the National Institute of Technology for the Deaf (RIT/NTID), the largest mainstream college in the world for deaf or hard of hearing individuals.
