02-21-23 City Club Dinner Meeting Featuring Caltech President Thomas Rosenbaum at Joe’s Garage

Dr. Thomas Rosenbaum, President of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), will be the featured speaker at the February 21, 2023 dinner meeting of the San Marino City Club. His talk will explore how fundamental scientific discoveries at Caltech have been translated into technologies that improve people’s lives, from clean air and electric vehicles to gene sequencing and surfboard design!

On July 1, 2014, Thomas F. Rosenbaum took office as Caltech’s ninth President, moving from the University of Chicago, where he served as the university’s vice president for research and for Argonne National Laboratory, and then as provost. He is a member of the Los Angeles Coalition for the Economy & Jobs, the Los Angeles World Affairs Council & Town Hall, and the board of trustees of the Society for Science & the Public.

Dr. Rosenbaum is an expert on the quantum mechanical nature of materials—the physics of electronic, magnetic, and optical materials at the atomic level—that are best observed at temperatures near absolute zero. He conducted research at Bell Laboratories and at IBM Watson Research Center before joining the University of Chicago and Caltech faculties. Dr. Rosenbaum is an elected fellow of the American Physical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Dr. Rosenbaum received his bachelor’s degree in physics with honors from Harvard University and an MA and PhD in physics from Princeton University.

The welcome reception will open at 5:45 p.m and the dinner meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. City Club members and guests must register at www.sanmarinocityclub.org. Guests are welcome to attend this dinner meeting for $30.00 per individual to be paid at the door.  The venue will be in Pasadena at Joe’s Garage where Joe Conzonire’s collection of classic cars will be on display. City Club members and guests do not want to miss this opportunity to hear from Dr. Rosenbaum and see (but not touch) these beautiful cars up close.
