Presentation Information

Shannon Curtis, Fairfax County VA Stormwater Planning Division  |  Urban streams experience high stormwater runoff volumes which carry pollutants from roads, lawns and commercial areas. Local governments are required to improve water quality and address impaired biological conditions. Traditional stream restoration methods have been shown to be successful at stabilizing streams, but not at improving water quality or recovering biological resources. In this presentation, Fairfax County Stormwater staff will discuss how regulatory drivers shape outcomes, our current efforts attempting to set realistic goals, adapt restoration methods to protect higher functioning reaches and improve those that are impaired, and establishment of rigorous monitoring programs to measure outcomes.
