PRESENTATION:
The Tappan Zee, the longest bridge in New York, opened in 1955 and was designed to last 50 years. Now work has begun on a bridge to replace it, one that will also be the widest in the world by some measures. The New NY Bridge (Tappan Zee Hudson River Crossing) between Westchester and Rockland Counties, New York is a twin three-mile, 44 span bridge, which includes 350-foot nominal steel girder approach spans and twin-tower cable stayed structures with 1200-foot main spans.
SPEAKERS:
Michael J. Martello is a registered professional engineer with HDR Engineering, Inc. and has 9+ years of experience in bridge design. He served as Tappan Zee HDR Project Engineer and Global Analysis task leader for the approach spans of the Tappan Zee Hudson River Crossing project; a $3.1 billion design-build project. Mr. Martello was in charge of furnishing a full analytical model of the 3-mile twin structure from abutment to abutment to perform seismic analysis of the Crossing.
Robert J. Palermo is a Senior Vice President with GZA GeoEnvironmental and has 40 years of experience with geotechnical engineering for bridges, buildings and underground construction. Bob is the Lead Geotechnical Engineer on the Tappan Zee project as part of the TZC Team, where he has been responsible for the subsurface exploration program, foundation design, pile load test program and instrumentation monitoring of the existing Tappan Zee Bridge during pile installation for the new bridge
