San Mateo/Hayward Bridge’s Orthotropic Deck Riding Surface?

Abstract:
A mile long orthotropic steel deck on the San Mateo/Hayward Bridge is included within the six lane wide, 7 mile long bridge crossing the San Francisco Bay. This orthotropic deck was the first in the United States on a major bridge. Over 40 materials were laboratory tested as candidates for original riding surface of the orthotropic portion of the San Mateo Bridge. The most promising were field tested on smaller orthotropic bridges. An epoxy asphalt concrete (EAC) was chosen. In service for almost 48 years, it was finally replaced in 2015 by a polyester concrete material. An evaluation of laboratory tests, field performances, and construction practice led to the selection of the initial EAC and replacement polyester concrete riding surface.
About the Speaker:
Mr. Ric Maggenti is Senior Materials and Research and a Senior Bridge Engineer. He is a Professional Engineer in California Government working for Caltrans. He earned a BS in Civil Engineering minoring in Economics (1985) and a BA in History (1979) at California State University, Sacramento. He has been working for Caltrans since 1983. From 1992 -1999 he worked as a Materials & Research Engineer at the Caltrans Structure Concrete & Rigid Pavement Unit of the Transportation Laboratory in Sacramento. Since late 1999 Ric has been assigned to an Office in Toll Bridge Design for the new east spans of the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge (SFOBB). During its construction, he was a design liaison to Caltrans construction staff. He served this same function for all the new toll bridges constructed and the seismic retro fixes of remaining ones. Since 2014 he has continued his worked on many other bridge projects and participates on several technical committees.

The 2017 draft of the Stormwater Quality Design Manual for the Sacramento Region is now available for public review! This edition of the Design Manual is based on the 2007 Stormwater Quality Design Manual for the Sacramento and South Placer Regions, but has been revised to incorporate hydromodification management, low impact development design standards, and trash requirements.
