Biomedical Engineering:  Some Recent Advances at USF in Neuroengineering

Speaker: Robert Frisina, PhD

Advances in biomedical engineering are coming at a rapid pace; due to increased demand for higher-quality healthcare, yet at lower costs. The increasing size of the "baby boomer" aging segment of our population also contributes to elevated demands on biomedical engineers. Biomedical engineering is now a priority growth field at the University of South Florida- USF; with new areas of research now emerging, including projects targeted at understanding the workings of the nervous and sensory systems; with new therapeutic interventions as an ultimate goal. A summary of some recent advances at USF in neuroengineering will be given, including new possibilities for preventing or treating hearing loss, including age-related hearing loss; new micropump designs for targeted drug delivery; and a novel design of implants aimed at stimulating nerve and cardiac cells, including nerves that carry auditory information to the brain in deaf persons.
