General Session: Lon Kieffer, “Feeling vs. Features: Why Feature Based Selling Doesn’t Work”

In most classical "selling" scenarios the buyer exhibits approach-re-approach behavior and is quite susceptible to Feature-based selling processes; the Caregiver Decision Maker exhibits a vastly different behavior of approach-avoidance and they are driven by Feelings-based process(es).   This program will discuss the "9 Mental Triggers" that help generate positive feelings and learn to reveal "Features" when they will be most impactful; and overall we will learn to stay away from falling into the "avoidance-trap"!

Improper medication administration is one of the most cited violations received by assisted living communities in Virginia and can result in injury or death of residents. Attendees will learn strategies to promote safe medication administration to improve the quality of care provided in Virginia’s assisted living industry.

Attendees will be provided with updates on business by the Board of Long Term Care Administrators. Some of the topics include: DHP – who we are & our mission, Statistics – licensure & discipline, Legislative Update, AIT Experience, Understanding the Acting AIT, Voluntary Preceptor List, and the SHEV Update. Attendees will also receive an update on NAB items such as the National AIT Training Program and the National AIT Preceptor Program.

Learn the art of successful facility and interdepartmental delegation!

Joani Latimer “The Power of 'Us': Providers and Ombudsmen Building a Bridge to the Future”
In the often stressful, high-pressure world of trying to deliver quality long-term care services, providers must respond to pressures to meet the bottom line as well as consumer expectations, while conforming to multiple sets of standards and regulations.  In that landscape, an ombudsman carrying out the mandate to serve as resident advocate can feel to a provider like one more pressure point.  This session takes a look at the role and mandate of the Ombudsman Program, examining its goals and operating principles as well as the ways in which the Ombudsman can be a valuable resource to providers seeking to continually improve care and services for residents.  What can you expect from your ombudsman and what does it look like when the partnership between provider and ombudsman works best to serve residents?  The session describes the hidden resource into which providers can tap as they seek to ‘keep a finger on the pulse’ of their home’s operations and to adjust and improve services and satisfaction for a changing population of residents.
