The Role and Use of Evidence in Life Care Planning
An Invitational Boutique Conference Designed Specifically for Expert Life Care Planners and Vocational Consultants
Presented by Caragonne and Associates, LLC
April 25, 2018 - April 29, 2018
Ajijic, Jalisco, Mexico
The Leisure and Learn Conferences are four-day workshops specifically designed to offer litigation experts an opportunity to acquire valuable skills and content. The locale for Leisure and Learn is a peaceful and secluded learning venue in Ajijic, a small mountain village located on the shores of Lake Chapala, Jalisco, MX. This is the 9th Leisure and Learn workshop. We hope you can join us.
You are a reasonably experienced and seasoned life care planner.
You don’t have a large staff; you operate on a modest budget with little formal research support.
Your client needs a life care plan with a solid evidence basis. She expects you to be able to defend your resources in testimony.
Opposing counsel has a history of filing Daubert challenges, so it’s very likely they’ll challenge your evidence and testimony. You’ve never dealt with a Daubert challenge before. As a certified life care planner, you're more than a little concerned. You want to be sure that there are no gaps in your skills before your initial deposition, but how? How should this affect how you write your plan? How can you best prepare it to offset that challenge? How can you compare your knowledge and skills with others in the field and maximize your effective use of evidence?
You’ve completed formal life care planning training and have appropriate and relevant certifications. You are interested in engaging with other Life Care Planning professionals regarding the ever evolving litigation landscape. You want to share insights and experiences with other successful planners in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere where you can engage with others as you partake in the unique environment that is the hallmark of the Leisure and Learn experience. Return to your practice enriched by the diversity of approaches and opinions regarding one of today's most important issues -- evidence.
We’ve designed Leisure and Learn 2018 to provide you with means to address these professional challenges. The workshop’s objective is adding valuable conceptual and research skills to your professional repertoire, addressing these key concepts:
* The trial attorney’s concept of evidence
* Their rationale for using evidence
* How they approach the selective use of evidence
* What constitutes reliable and defensible evidence
Specifically, you’ll get the answers to these questions, and others such as: Collateral resources issues: How to address collateral resources in a plaintiff plan. If on defense, how to properly interpret a health insurance policy and benefits. Would you change your approach if you were on the plaintiff side? Or --
* How ethics fit into the use of evidence; unethical use of evidence
* Applying professional standards to develop or critique a plan
* Sometimes experts are excluded after Daubert challenge: What those cases teach us about the proper use of evidence
* Learn about the four types of evidence
* How forensic economists obtain and use evidence
* What kind of evidence do vocational rehabilitation counselors use
* Evidence in nursing plans of care
* How to use evidence in an evidence-based treatment plan
* How to define your information needs and locate relevent evidence-based literature
* Identifying and comparing an evidence-free life care plan to an evidence-based plan
* Best strategies to defend your certification or use of evidence in a Daubert hearing
Nationally recognized life care planners will present exemplar plans to show how they used evidence to clarify specific issues, explain what types of evidence they chose to use, and why.
Another panel will present strategies they used when facing a Daubert challenge to their certifications and experience.
Visiting trial, forensic economic, and vocational rehabilitation experts will review how they use evidence strategically.
