Gift Acceptance Policies—Why, When, What, How, and Who

Program Description:
A gift acceptance policy is one of those things that every charity is supposed to have-but why?

In the first hour of this this program, we'll explore the role of gift acceptance policies in charity fundraising, discuss the topics that a gift acceptance policy should cover, and learn what pitfalls the policy can help your charity to avoid. In the second hour of this program, we'll hear from a panel of gift planners on their experiences with gift acceptance policies in practice.

Barbara Rhomberg is partner at Kavanagh Rhomberg LLP, a Bay Area law firm that represents nonprofit organizations and their charitable donors on the unique legal issues of the nonprofit sector, including forming nonprofit organizations and obtaining tax-exempt status, planned and charitable giving, limits on lobbying campaign intervention for exempt organizations, grant compliance, endowments and donor-restricted funds, and nonprofit corporate governance.

She is currently on the Board of Directors of the Northern California Planned Giving Council.

Donor Relations: Saying "No" to a Gift while Maintaining Good Donor Relations

Program Description: 
The presentation will introduce the elements vital for good donor relations in those situations when you need it most  It will incorporate case studies to highlight the important parts of the donor relationship that one would want to maintain throughout any gift discussion.

Jean working as a gift planner in Grand Rapids, MI in 1983 after graduating form Notre Dame Law School in South Bend, IN.  Later at the University of Portland in Oregon, I was a co-founder of the Portland Planned Giving Council and served as the second president.  I also attended my first national meeting for gift planner sduring this time.  In 1990, I took a position at UCSD and served as the president of the San Diego Planned Giving Council as well as the president of of the Estate Planning Council.  In the mid 90s and later, I took other more senior development positions while keeping a hand in gift planning. (VP at Scripps College and EVP at Scripps Clinic)  In 2004, I went back to the University of Notre Dame where I helped lead one of the most successful campaigns for a university without a medical school.  Due to the creation of three new gift planning programs, twenty-five percent of ND's seventh campaign totaling $2B plus came through planned gifts.  Both at Notre Dame and at UCSD, I also enjoyed working on numerous principal gifts.  Currently, I am focused on gift planning for Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford and the pediatrics programs at the Stanford University School of Medicine.
