Empty nest syndrome is a general feeling of grief and loneliness that many parents experience when their children leave home to live on their own. Mothers, often the primary caregivers in the home, are more likely than fathers to experience empty nest syndrome. It can be particularly hard on single mothers.
Parents who experience empty nest syndrome may become sad, depressed, or overwhelmed by worry, stress or anxiety about the health and well-being of their child. They may feel abandoned or rejected by their child.
An empty nest does not have to be a negative experience however. The first step to alleviating the symptoms of an empty nest is to recognize the loss you are experiencing and honor it by allowing for a period of grieving. As you grieve, a process of transformation begins. Like a journey, this process will lead you to re-invent your relationship with your child into an adult relationship as well as serve as an opportunity to redefine who you are and to create a NEW life based on your dreams.
