Description:

The presence of women with both a substance use disorder and an eating disorder has become normative in both residential and outpatient treatment. More often than not this clinical profile is even more complicated by an individual’s history of trauma. The purpose of this talk is twofold. First, this workshop will discuss similarities and differences between eating disorders and substance use and to discuss treatment of ED and SUD targeting the unique clinical needs of this complex and challenging patient. Secondly, it will explore the relationship between and eating disorders, addictions, and trauma as well as the implications and treatment of these comorbid conditions.

Objectives:

1. Upon completion of this course participants will be able to identify and discuss symptom interaction patterns that occur between eating disorders and addictions.
2. The audience will be able to understand and discuss the function of an eating disorder as a way of coping with traumatic experiences.
