The target audience will be nursing staff, social workers, psychologists, licensed professional counselors, and other mental health therapists or graduate students in those fields. Information will be presented at an intermediate level.

Segment 1: "Why Bullies Bully"

Presented by Patricia Calabrese PMHNP

Purpose:

This presentation will discuss issues in recent research regarding bullying behaviors. Discussion will explore character profiles, family make-up and the importance of power and control. Emphasis will be on extinguishing bullying aggression in children.

Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to identify 4 types of bullying.
  • Participants will be able to list 3 characteristics of bullies.
  • Participants will be able to identify 2 commonalities of bullying and sexual violence.

Segment 2: "Coloring Inside The Lines: How to Maintain Boundaries When Working with Children"

Presented by Leah Claire Bennett, Ph.D. and Christina Williams, Ph.D.

Purpose:

This seminar will focus on the recognition, teaching and understanding of professional boundaries involved in working in a clinical setting with children.

Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to identify and discuss boundaries within the child and adolescent population.
  • Participants will be able to use concepts to apply to case examples of boundaries.
  • Participants will be able to explain professional boundaries in working within a child’s support network.

Segment 3: "Parenting Adolescents: Encouraging Compliance, Minimizing the Power Struggle"

Presented by Ted Crawford, LMFT

Purpose:

To aid professionals in teaching parents how to increase compliance in their teenagers while decreasing the level of power struggle that normally goes with it.

Objectives:

  • Instruct a parent in how to encourage open communication from their teenager.
  • Instruct a parent in how to avoid “triangulation” when giving expectations to their teenager.
  • Identify the two essential questions parents are to consider when implementing effective discipline.
  • List five steps to negotiating compliance from teenagers.
  • Explain ways that parents can increase their chances of following through with the 5 step negotiating process.

Segment 4: "Setting the Course of Treatment following a Natural Disaster: Clinical Implications and Approaches for Children and Adolescents"

Presented by Mallory Malkin, Ph.D.

Purpose:

To inform the treatment and approach to children and adolescents suffering from adjustment disorder and trauma, specifically related to experiencing natural disasters.

Objectives:

  • Describe a general overview of the diagnostic criteria for Adjustment Disorder and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and more specifically address these diagnoses as they relate to the experience of natural disasters for children and adolescents.
  • Describe evidenced based approaches and discuss tools with regard to the treatment of children and adolescents who have experienced trauma. For instance, the utility of Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) will be discussed in detail.
  • Explain the clinical implications with regard to the impact of the recent tornadoes in the Southern Mississippi and New Orleans areas.
