Segment One

Shame On You: Trauma Shame And Substance Use

Presenter: John Herrington, MS, LPC (1.5 hours)

Purpose statement: During this segment of the workshop, attendees will be exploring the relationship between shame, trauma, and substance use disorder

Objectives:

1. Identify shame and distinguish between healthy and toxic shame and guilt.
2. Explore trauma: meaning and effect on substance use.
3. Identify and explore addictive bx and thinking patterns.

Segment Two

Connection: Bridging the Gap Between Older Adults and Recovery

Presenter: Russell C. Rainey, MS, LPC (1.5 hours)

Purpose: During this segment of the workshop, attendees will learn about addiction treatment and spirituality in older adults.

1. Describe the characteristics of an older adult and identify addiction in the older adult population.
2. Define Spirituality within the context of 12 step recovery.
3. Discuss concepts of God and Higher Power utilizing exercises practiced with older adults in treatment.

Target Audience for All Speakers:

The target audience will be social workers, psychologists, licensed professional counselors, and other mental health therapists or graduate students in those fields. Information will be presented at an intermediate level.
