Introducing an Exciting New Workshop...

Applying Motivational Interviewing in Group Settings

November 28-29, 2017 ~ Saint Paul, Minnesota

Trainers:  Fran Lesicko, Polar Star Consulting and                             Suzanne EckMaahs, EckMaahs & Associates Training & Consulting

Event Hosted by RADIAS Health

Training Overview:  The vast majority of Motivational Interviewing (MI) training is designed for application to one-on-one conversations about change.  However, a large proportion of counseling, across many disciplines and subject matters, occurs in groups. This workshop will provide an overview of MI applications in group settings and an opportunity for hands-on practice. It will also give participants a chance to brainstorm ideas for how to apply the learning to their individual practice or work setting.

Learning Objectives:                                                                                                                                Participants will transfer current MI knowledge and practice skills to group applications by…

               1.  Understanding basic principles for effective group facilitation.

               2.  Differentiating principles of MI in group practice as compared to individual practice.

               3.  Understanding the four phases of MI groups.

               4.  Learning a variety of methods for integrating MI into group practice.

               5.  Experiencing and/or demonstrating a sampling of common MI group exercises.

               6.  Understanding how to modify MI applications based on group design.

 Who should attend

Practitioners who are running, or will be running, groups and wish to integrate Motivational Interviewing practices and principles in the process. Participants must have already been trained in traditional MI and have practiced it in one-to-one application.

Note:  The examples provided in the workshop will be geared primarily to employment counseling and related topics such as mental health, substance abuse, stress managemnet, etc.  However other group practitioners may benefit from the theory and practice and are welcome to attend.
