Girls Innovation Academy at SU

Girls Innovation Academy @ SU is a strategic female-only initiative tailored to middle-school girls to enhance their competence and confidence in innovation and leadership. In a collaborative, supportive, and creative environment, girls entering six, seventh and either grade explore science, technology, environment, civic engagement, communication, and arts. We invite girls to uncover their potential, prepare for higher education, and discover unexplored career paths.

GIA 2018 is currently full. You can sign up for our wait list here or for our email newsletters here to keep up-to-date for next year. Thank you to all of the families who registered!
We can't wait for summer!

The cost of the academy is $200 per week, total of $600. It is important that girls attend all three weeks of the program.

Highlights

The three-week summer program is held at Salisbury University, an award-winning “green” campus. Both sessions focus on leadership, communication, technology and innovation.

Each week, the group travels to off-campus sites to learn about technology in action – including NASA and high-tech businesses.

Leadership training includes creating and presenting vision boards, social media identity and safety, bias and perceptions, nonverbal power, relational support and networks, media myths of women, conflict resolution, college readiness, cultural diversity, improvisation, and team building through outdoor leadership activities.

Computer-lab training features stop-motion video, soundtrack recording, 3D printing, light-board video, web design, blogging, Slack, information literacy, online education, and poster design.  Campus tours involve IT, Geographic Information Systems Cooperative, Perdue Hub Entrepreneur Center, Henson Simulation Center, sustainable buildings, bee keeping, neuroscience lab, BEACON, solar energy stations, TV and audio production studios, and art galleries.

The program is directed by a core team from the Center for Extended and Lifelong Learning:  Mary Angela Baker, Dr. Chrys Egan, and Molly Riordan, plus approximately 75 people from the campus and community for leadership, innovation training, and campus or community tours.

"GIA continues to be an amazing experience for my daughter.  We as parents are always seeking a safe place where children learn, grow, make friends and be themselves.  GIA is that place.  My daughter has made friends she keeps in touch with and is looking forward to upcoming summer program."
