21 June 2023 DPAAS meeting

“The Situation in Sudan.”

We are very pleased to announce that Glen Duerr, PhD, (Cedarville University) will be our speaker on 21 June 2023 (Wednesday), 11:30 – 1:30 PM, 2800 Presidential Drive, Holiday Inn, Fairborn, Ohio. Glen will discuss "The Situation in Sudan."

Abstract: When conflict broke out in Sudan on April 15, 2023, it caught many international observers by surprise leading many to posit a couple of key questions—why did this conflict start and what is at stake? To help provide answers to these questions, this presentation will cover three areas: 1) a brief history of Sudan and the conditions that led to the current conflict, 2) the key demographic cut points in the society, and 3) what the United States can do in response. Surveying Sudan’s history through Anglo-Egyptian rule in 1899, de jure independence in 1956, the longstanding and fissiparous civil war ending in 2005, the secession of South Sudan in 2011, to the signing of the Abraham Accords in 2021, what does Sudan’s history tell us about the present? What role do demographic factors like ethnicity, religion, and tribal affiliations play in the current conflict? And, at what level should the United States engage the conflict in Sudan for humanitarian, diplomatic, and/or security reasons?

Glen Duerr is Professor of International Studies and incoming Chair of the Department of History and Government at Cedarville University. Born and raised in the United Kingdom, he lived in Canada for a decade where he obtained his B.A. (Honors) and M.A. degrees in history and political science, before moving to the United States to earn his Ph.D. in political science with a focus on international relations from Kent State University. As connected to his academic work, he has visited 36 countries, authored or edited three books, and has conducted over 800 media interviews on subjects related to diplomacy and security. He also serves as City Councilman in Beavercreek, Ohio.
